What is a NAS?
To simplify things a bit for the average user, we will try our best not to overwhelm you with all the technical stuff about networking and storage.
A NAS or Network Attached Storage is a hardware unit or a box with hard drives in it, which actually represents cloud storage or simply “the cloud” you already use every single day. Examples are Onedrive, Google Drive, Dropbox, and many more.
Only difference here is that we, kind of, have to approach is that those providers can’t give us enough storage to store all our data and that we don’t want to pay a monthly fee for just a couple terrabytes of storage.
Why a NAS?
As we are into photography and videography your local PC storage or Cloud storage will never be enough to store all these files and therefor we need to find another solution.
Therefor they invented NAS systems for the local consumer. Nowadays they can accommodate a lot of hard drives and are fast and reliable. The more drives inside the unit, the more safe it gets and a couple hard drive failures may occur without losing any data.
When a NAS?
Of course, if one has only got a couple documents and photography or videography isn’t your thing, then it is not the right tool for you.
