Fashion capital of Flanders

Antwerp is located near the Scheldt river, linked to the North Sea by the Westerschelde estuary. The Port of Antwerp is one of the biggest in the world, ranking second in Europe.

Fortified City

Although it was formerly a fortified city, hardly anything remains of the former enceinte, only some remains of the city wall can be seen near the Vleeshuis museum at the corner of Bloedberg and Burchtgracht. A replica of a castle named Het Steen has been partly rebuilt on the quay in the 19th century.
This castle attracts many tourists each year and the statue of the Lange Wapper awaits them in front of the sloped bridge of Belgian blocks or setts.

Kieldrecht Lock

Previously known as the Deurganckdoksluis, is the world’s largest lock, taking over this title from the Berendrecht Lock.
The lock was opened on June 10, 2016 in the presence of King Philippe of Belgium.

Eugeen Van Mieghem

(October 1, 1875 – March 24, 1930) was a Belgian artist born in the port of Antwerp, who is famous for his drawings and paintings of harbour scenes. As a boy Van Mieghem was confronted with the harsh reality of life at the waterfront.

Courthouse of Antwerp

Inaugurated on March 28, 2006 by King Albert.
Designed by architect Richard Rogers.
The building cost 280 million euros or nearly four times the estimated amount.

Royal Museum of fine arts

This neoclassical building was completed in 1894 and is one of the primary landmarks of the Zuid district of Antwerp. It opened its doors to the public in 1890 and the construction begun in 1884.
Designed by Jacob Winders (1849–1936) and Frans van Dijk (1853-1839).
The Royal Museum of Fine Arts houses a collection of paintings, sculptures and drawings from the fourteenth to the twentieth centuries.
At the end of 2011 the museum closed to the public for major renovations. Planned reopening is in 2019.

The commemoration of WWI in Antwerp

2014, the year that Antwerp took part of the commemoration of the First World War (1914 to 1918).
A pontoon bridge as a peace bridge across the Scheldt river, it was a unique experience for the many tens of thousands of visitors who crossed the River Scheldt on foot, following the footsteps of the Belgian army as well as of the more than 10,000 refugees who fled a burning city in search of a safe haven.


The place to be for artists, musicians and exhibitions of all sorts.
Designed by architect Léon Stynen (1899-1990), opened on November 4, 1980 in the presence of the royal couple Boudewijn en Fabiola.

The Nationalestraat

“The Nationalestraat is one of the most memorable streets of Antwerp in Belgium”

Een eenvoudige ondergrond om over te rijden als trambestuurder, wagenchauffeur en fietser voelt heerlijk onder de voeten en zorgt voor een goed gevoel om steeds meer en meer snelheid te willen halen. Een onmetelijke snelheid om nooit meer te vergeten en achter te laten als een verbroken record.

Dit record van zovelen na het laatste zal het beste zijn en één om nooit meer te vergeten. Ik refereer niet naar de feiten van afgelopen werkelijkheid, ik refereer naar een nieuw record. Een referentie die hopelijk niet al te ver weg van ons verwijderd is. Een feit dat kan geuit worden als een echt feit, een daadwerkelijk feit.

Liefde voor elkaar is vandaag de dag een iets hardere realiteit die blijkbaar niet meteen behaald kan worden. Noch door verschillende nationaliteiten, rassen en religies, noch door de mensheid op zichzelf.

Laten we elkaar liefhebben, laten we dit voorbeeld van de Nationalestraat ‘Internationaler’ maken en iedereen liefhebben. Alhoewel ik weet dat dat geen eenvoudige taak is en niet direct in onze hersenpan geschreven staat, maar ik doe mijn best om dit ook te doen.

Te houden van het onmogelijke, te houden van het tegenovergestelde, het onvoorspelbare, simpelweg het onverwachte.

Wereld, Al heeft je lief <3

An unforgettable speed to never forget or leave behind as another broken record. This record will be your best one and shall never be forgotten. I don’t refer to the facts from the last reality, I refer to a new record. A reference hopefully not all too far from our bedroom.

A fact that can be written as a true fact, an actual fact. Love for each other is today a rather hard to achieve reality that is rare to be found. Nor by different nationalities, races or religions, nor by human beings themselves.

Let us love each other. Although I know it isn’t an easy job and it is also not directly written in our busy brain system, but I simply try to understand others and have an extra space for them in my head. To love the impossible, to love the opposite, to love the unpredictable, simply the unexpected.
