The Battle of Verdun

Feb 21, 1916 – Dec 18, 1916

World War 1

World War 1 was a global war originating in Europe that lasted from 28 July 1914 to 11 November 1918 and is considered one of the deadliest conflicts in history.

It was directly triggered by the assassination of the Austrian archduke, Franz Ferdinand and his wife, on 28th June 1914 by Bosnian revolutionary, Gavrilo Princip.

This event was, however, simply the trigger that set off declarations of war. The actual causes of the war are more complicated and are still debated by historians today.

“What started World War 1 began with two deaths.
It ended with 17 million more dead.”

Military And Civilian Deaths On Both Sides

The Allies, or Entente Powers, counted around 6 million deaths, the Central Powers 4 million.

Many people died, not from combat, but from diseases caused by the war, estimated at around 2 million deaths. 6 million people went missing during the war and were presumed dead.

Two out of three soldiers died in battle, the rest died due to infections or disease. The Spanish flu also killed many people in prisoner camps.

Battle of Verdun

(February 21, 1916 — December 18, 1916), Central Powers engagement in which the French repulsed a major German offensive in the area of Verdun, France. It was one of the longest, bloodiest, and most-ferocious battles of the war.

103 Years Later

Me, my colleague and his wife went on a two-day trip in May 2019 to see some impressive leftovers from the battle of Verdun in France. He knows for sure almost everything about war so it was a very interesting thing to experience.

First up was the monument of Colonel Driant and his command post PC du Colonel Driant in Bois des Caures where he was killed during withdrawal on 22 February 1916.

The ultimate

camping & hiking gear

I am born in a family that loves to travel the adventurous way. I also love their way of travelling, it’s so awesome. They owned a Land Rover Defender and went on vacation together with their good friends who also owns the same car, but different colour and version of the brand. Altogether we had so much fun going on adventure, we met lots of difficult 4×4 roads to beautiful locations around the world. Unreachable by normal car, the tracks were quite scary at times and our Land Rover took us through every time.

It was amazing to being able to have experienced all this. For sure I would love to continue their way of travelling and I already did some solo vacations. Both adventurous and a little bit of luxury as I couldn’t take the tent with me.

Travel photography gear guide – 2018

As a frequent traveller and photography lover I like to carry my killer-heavy camera wherever I go. Sure it’s not for everyone, but those who want to take their photography skills to the next level then here are some amazing tips and recommendations all for you.

I love the Canon cameras and Sigma lenses and I bought my first Canon in 2013, the Mark III. An awesome beast of equipment I still love to use. Back then 4K video wasn’t incorporated into DSLRs but I mostly do photos and I am very happy with the result that comes straight out of this camera. Together with the Sigma lenses it just gets better. Went from my dad’s Canon zoom lenses to a vast wide-angle Sigma 20 mm lens and I loved it so much I want to stay with Sigma. It has the Canon mount and it is hereby completely compatible.

The camera brands are endless and the list of cameras grow every year, but here you have my favourite collection of choices and what I think is the best for your type of photography.

How I took this photo?

I was fortunate there was a railing to clamp on the tripod I had with me. Timer set to 2 seconds to stabilise the shot when you press and release the shutter button.

I’m Using the Canon 5D Mark II wherever I go. Together with the Sigma lens they form a perfect couple. For this camera the native RAW file is quite large and lots of storage is necessary. Surprisingly you can fit two memory cards in that massive camera.

Both photos made with the Canon 16-35 mm lens + Tiffen 77 mm UV Protection Filter in front.

It’s IMPORTANT not to forget about this little disk for just every camera lens you own! It can save you lots of money if your lens get damaged, so I recommend you to invest in a lens filter right now.

As I currently have a Sigma 20 mm I don’t have a lens filter because it’s a spherical-shaped glass. I can’t screw a filter on it, even though I wish they had a solution.

Choose below from the most-sold filters on Amazon. But think about quality-first before you decide to buy one!

Shot this in bright daylight and the brand-new Sigma lens was blocking the sun for me. I had to edit the shadows because they were too dark. Resulting in more noise, but I added even more in Adobe Lightroom just to alter a better effect.

What I recommend.

If you’re a smartphone lover and you most likely love them somehow as they are becoming a necessity in our lives, then I can recommend you two brands of smartphones. One I personally use is the iPhone 5s, I know mine is from December 2013. So I won’t recommend you buy an old phone.

World Nomads Travel Insurance

As I love to travel far away from home for mostly a couple of weeks or more I’ll need insurance. Luckily I am insured via the worldwide Alpenverein insurance, but few have that and so I recommend World Nomads as they have pretty good reviews.

I stayed at the Yesinn Hostel and this was my first time to sleep in a triple bunk bed. I booked a 9-bed mixed dormitory and luckily I had a curtain for a little more privacy. Definitely worth it if you travel on a budget.

The Ashoka Hostel, a relatively comfortable hostel if you travel on a tight budget. I had a small room with 4 beds and a little space for my luggage. The bed was a bit small for a European like me. Then to mention the bathroom, less than 90 by 90 cm, with toilet, sink, shower and changing place in one space. After a shower everything wet… including towels and clothes and even worse toilet and paper too.

Although some rooms are single-person and quite nice. Located in a crowded area, so prepare yourself if your room is at the side of the building. Other than that it’s a cheap alternative with kind staff.

The only hostel in the area is the YHA Davis Youth Hostel and it is a simple accommodation for travellers who hike the mountains and bring a visit to the village of Ngong Ping. A small village famous among tourists and monks who reside at the Po Lin Monastery. Lantau’s peak trail and the Wisdom Path starts just there. There was no breakfast included and showers were shared. Interestingly their were tents to provide extra space on the property. I really miss sleeping in a tent and these looked really nice.

An amazing resort

Lantau Island

How to get there?

Take the ferry from Central to Mui Wo. From there you can take the bus to your next destination. Find ticket fares in the link below.

Where to stay?

The Silvermine Beach Resort is a great hotel at a perfect location, MUI WO beach. A hike to Silvermine waterfalls and cave followed and then back to my resort to grab dinner and a good rest. The Russan guy Vasya slept in my room too as he had no place to stay and the city centre was too far away. It was already dark as we were back at the beach.

Silvermine Beach Resort, Mui Wo

I spent the night of December 30th at the Silvermine Beach Resort and I loved everything about it. From location to accommodation. Only 10 metres away from Mui Wo beach, you really can’t miss it. Friendly staff, clean room and big bathroom with walk-in shower, nice. My window view were Christmas decorations lighting up the front garden. The swimming pool was closed as it was winter.

Well, the sea was nearby and warm enough to take a fresh swim to escape the heat. I didn’t take dinner nor breakfast there, which I kind of regret as it was really looking great on their website. New Year 2018 was nearing and my next accommodation on Lantau was located at Ngong Ping. A cheap hostel near a monastery and the Big Buddha.

I stayed here on December 30 till 31, 2017.

Free campsites

Shui Long Wo Campsite, Ma On Shan

Address:
Ma On Shan, Hong Kong

One good thing about accommodation in Hong Kong is that camping in Hong Kong is completely free of any charge. I slept on a mountain top, a beach and BBQ site near the Shui long Wo official campsite.

If you have a small tent and want to cut travel budgets then this option is great for you.

Be sure to bring a mattress because I admit the soil in Hong Kong is pretty hard.

Top things to do and much more

Hong Kong travel guide

I went for 2 weeks to HK in December 2017 and you know what? I loved it so much I will return in December 2018!

» Top things to do in Hong Kong

Find out about the hidden secrets Hong Kong beholds. It’s not only steel, concrete and bad air! All essential instructions to get somewhere and my most favourite spots in one post.

» How to get to Hong Kong?

As I live in Belgium I took the plane from Amsterdam Schiphol to Zurich and Zurich to Hong Kong. I had better booked a direct flight. Which I’ll advise you the strongest. Saves you all the waiting in between two flights.

» What to pack?

1. Photography gear As a photo geek, who doesn’t love taking pictures these days, you need a good camera, a mighty lens and some storage. Or as a travel person you need the right equipment, not a big deal but still you need a good bag and some spare clothes. 2. Clothes and other equipment Yeah, we all need some clothes and maybe you find some interesting things you like.

» When is the best time to visit?

I can strongly recommend to visit Hong Kong in December as it is one with perfect weather. Temperatures went well above 20 degrees. Not much rain, not too hot (if you are from Europe). A sweater for the cold wind in the mountains is recommended. Also a jeans and a jacket for the somewhat colder nights around Christmas is nice to have.

» What you may not miss?

If you visit Hong Kong for more than a few days try out these recommended destinations and you’ll love your journey even more.

Top things to do in Hong Kong

First things first! Public transport made easy.

Octopus card

As soon as you reach Hong Kong, be sure to grab your Octopus card. It is a card to make your travel so much easier and can save you lots of dollars.

How does it work?

Octopus card is a contactless stored value card that provides customers a simple, safe and secure way to pay. First launched in 1997 across public transport systems, the applications of the Octopus card (and other physical Octopus devices such as watches, key rings, ornaments, etc.) have since continued to grow. From a simple way to pay fares on public transport, Octopus has extended its reach into small-value payments in the retail sector as well as many other applications, including government tolled tunnel, parking, access control for residential and commercial building, support for various facilities in schools and self-service kiosks. The card can also be used online with compatible NFC devices. Today, more than 35 million Octopus cards are in circulation, with 99% of people in Hong Kong using Octopus cards to travel, shop and dine without the hassle of cash.

Get more info about the card here. The Standard Octopus card is priced at HK$100 for adults. Can be bought at the airport or at any station in Hong Kong.

MTR Map of Hong Kong

Here is the mass transit railway map. Hong Kong’s most efficient public transport system.

Double-decker streetcars, the city’s historic trams

Since 1904 they are and remain an inexpensive and fun way to travel between Kennedy Town and Shau Kei Wan on Hong Kong Island.

For the greatest experience you have to take a seat next to a window on the upper deck. Neighbourhoods you’ll pass include some of Hong Kong’s most colourful, such as Western district, Wan Chai, Happy Valley, Causeway Bay and North Point. Trams run daily from early morning until midnight.

No matter how far you travel, each tram ride costs the same flat fare and exact change is required if you are paying by cash. All trams accept Octopus cards. You need to get on the tram at the back and then pay the exact fare at the front when you’re getting off.

The interactive map is right here.

If you love hiking

The Sweet Gum Woods of Tai Tong

Only for the beautiful colours of the trees you would go there. Because of it’s subtropical climate these trees turn into many different colours of green, orange and red. During winter this hike is simply a must for nature lovers.

It is located in the Tai Lam country park north west of Hong Kong, easy reachable by the MTR and bus.

How to get to Sweet Gum Woods in Tai Tong?

BY PUBLIC TRANSPORT – BUS K66

  1. Take the MTR West Rail Line (Purple line) to Long Ping Station.
  2. Take Exit B2, and then take MTR Bus K66.
  3. Alight at Tai Tong Shan Road (second last stop), and then walk uphill for about 60-80 minutes to reach the Sweet Gum Woods.

However, during the season when the leaves turn red, the K66 bus plies directly between Long Ping MTR and Tai Tong Shan Road (no stops in between) on Sundays and public holidays. It also drops you at the roundabout, which saves you 500 m of walking. To catch the direct bus, follow the signs once you take Exit B2 at the Long Ping MTR. It operates between 10:30 and 16:00 for the Tai Tong bound service, and from 13:00 to 19:00 for the Long Ping Station bound service with a frequency of 15 minutes.

BY PUBLIC TRANSPORT – RED MINIBUS

You can also get there by Red Minibus. Catch the bus at Hung Min Court in Yuen Long, and get off at Tai Tong Shan Road. Walk along Tai Tong Shan Road uphill for about 60 minutes to reach the Sweet Gum Woods.

BY TAXI

It’s probably best to take a green taxi from Yuen Long MTR to the country park. The fare should be around HK$ 60.

Mui Wo is the perfect place to spend a couple of days if you love the beach or a hike to the nearby Silvermine Cave.It is located in a bay, so the waves are very calm to enjoy a swim in the sea. There is a cable car from Tung Chung to Ngong Ping, which takes 25 minutes for 5.7 km total length and costs HK$160 for a single trip standard cabin. HK$235 for the round trip.
